CHAPTER ELEVEN

“I refuse to believe it,” bellowed Volkar while he paced up and down the cockpit where they’d returned a few minutes ago to dis-engage the auto pilot.

“Down boy.” Carly fielded the glare he blasted her with and shrugged, trying hard not to reveal how much his vehement denials stabbed her in the back. And her heart. “It makes sense. At least a kinda warped sense.”

Volkar stopped his marching, planted his hands on his hips and glared, nostrils flaring, at the ceiling.

Eyeing his heaving chest, a wistful memory popped into her mind of the last time she witnessed his laboured breathing and she snapped straight in the nav chair. No time to be daydreaming over engaging in another blissful bout of sex in her bunk or anywhere else for that matter. She really should try to remember this bloke was out of bounds. Separate roads, remember? And there was definitely a connection between him and Sherise. And that Purkon woman had her claws into him. Now it looked as if he’d had something going on with Lady Marja.

No way would she join the queue.

But, a girl could still daydream.

“Why are you smiling? There is nothing in this situation I find amusing.”

“For heaven’s sake, Volkar, get a grip. Ranting and raving is not helping.”

“Affirmative, but it relieves my stress.” Volkar blew out a long sigh and sank into the pilot’s chair, swinging his feet up to rest on the consol.

His chin sunk onto his chest and despite herself, she couldn’t help another smile tugging at her lips as she viewed his doleful face. Come to think of it, he looked more resigned than heartbroken. A bit like a little boy who’s woken up to the fact there’s no such thing as Santa Claus.

I bet I could give him a present that would blow his mind.

Oooh, did I really think that? Volkar’s not the only one that needs to focus. She pretended an interest in the constant data stream that gave minute by minute updates on the flyer’s position within the vortex. “Not long now and we’ll be clear and on our way to the station.”

Volkar grunted.

Carly rolled her eyes. Men. Should she question him about his involvement with Marja or let it go? Surely she had a good fifteen years on him? Although to a much younger Volkar, the interest of such a beautiful and assured woman would no doubt have outweighed any consideration of an age difference.

After waiting a beat, Carly said, “We need to discuss Marja’s involvement. If any.” And yours with her. Every sense she possessed warned her there was more to this connection.

When he raised his head and looked at her, she added, “Just because her name is mentioned doesn’t make her guilty of wrongdoing.”

“Affirmative and this I would also wonder if you had not voiced your suspicions.”

“What can I say? I’m positive it was her voice speaking to El Riskert while I waited near the doorway to trade for your life. When I entered he was seated beside a deep sub-space vid station and looking smug.
